BasicMOST is the most commonly used version of MOST. It is typically used to measure activities that are ‘medium’ cycle, which is a few seconds to approximately 10 minutes in length. BasicMOST can be applied to all types of industries such as retail grocery, retail apparel, distribution and assembly-type of operations. Activities measured with BasicMOST can be both repetitive and non-repetitive.

MOST was developed by Kjell Zandin and H. B. Maynard and Company, Inc. in 1974. The MOST Work Measurement System originated from another predetermined motion time system called Methods Time Measurement (MTM). MOST does not require that tasks be broken down into the finite detail of MTM, focusing rather on grouping together the basic motions that frequently occur into predefined ‘sequence models’. Using these sequence models ensures a higher level of user consistency and accuracy. The MOST Work Measurement Technique was considered revolutionary because it allowed the user to measure work much more quickly than its’ predecessor MTM, while still maintaining a high level of accuracy.
